Automatic sports timing uses sensors to trigger the start, split or finish result when an athlete, bicycle or other participant crosses a defined timing point. It reduces the operator reaction delay associated with pressing a manual stopwatch and creates a repeatable workflow for training and organized events.
The equipment still needs an operator to place the sensors, select the timing mode, check alignment and verify the course. Automation removes the manual button press from each crossing; it does not remove the need for a clear setup procedure.

- Beam start: Timing begins when the participant crosses the first sensor.
- Command or gunshot start: A compatible start device begins the clock before the participant reaches the finish gate.

For reliable use, place the sensor and reflector at the required height, keep the detection path clear and run a test pass before the session begins.
