S-002 shuttle run timing system for a same-point return course
S-002 and S-005 both record repeated movement, but the athlete's route through the timing point is different.

Shuttle Run or Lap Timing: S-002 or S-005 Course Choice

Shuttle run or lap timing starts with a course drawing. One route sends the athlete away from a shared start and finish, then back through it. The other brings the athlete past the same timing point again and again.

Draw the route with arrows

Sketch one athlete's complete test without writing a model number. Mark every place where the athlete crosses a timing line. If the drawing is a straight out-and-back route with one return finish, the S-002 product direction matches the course. Its current page describes a single-person turn-back timer for a test that starts and finishes at the same point.

If the drawing is a loop or repeated course and every passage needs its own lap record, review the S-005 product direction. Its page describes single-person multi-lap timing, individual lap times, total time and support for as many as 199 laps.

S-002 needs a firm turn rule

The timer can record the athlete's departure and return, but it cannot decide whether a foot reached the far line according to the test protocol. Put an observer at the turn. Write whether the athlete must touch the line, cross it or touch an object, and decide what invalidates a trial before the first scored run.

The listed S-002 package has one LED display, one reflector, two tripods, one power cable, a screen clip and a case. The published specification describes a short-range same-point setup and asks buyers to confirm site conditions. The S-002 equipment guide covers beam placement and a return-trigger rehearsal.

S-005 needs a passage rule

A lap system must know what each crossing means in the event sequence. State whether the first crossing starts timing, whether every later crossing completes a lap, and which passage ends the test. Place the waiting area away from the beam so another athlete does not add an event to the sequence.

The S-005 page lists two LED displays, one reflector, three tripods, two power cables, two screen clips and a case. It publishes a best-condition communication distance within 500 m and a typical range of 200 to 300 m. Treat those figures as model information, then test the planned site before recording athletes.

Do not turn one result into the other

A shuttle time includes acceleration, a braking phase, the turn and the return. A lap time reflects the course geometry and every action between two passages. The two numbers can both track training, but they do not describe the same task. Keep the test name, distance, turn or lap rule and course direction beside the result.

The shuttle comparison guide explains how to keep turn rules stable over time. For S-005 records, the lap review guide shows how to inspect sequence gaps, duplicate passages and total time.

Count the work around the timer

S-002 can be simpler on the timing side, yet the far turn still needs supervision. S-005 removes the distant turn judge when a loop is clearly marked, but someone must monitor lap order. The better system is the one that leaves no unowned decision in the session.

Use the result sheet as a test

Create five blank result rows before choosing the system. An S-002 sheet needs athlete ID, shuttle distance, turn rule, elapsed time and validity. An S-005 sheet needs athlete ID, passage or lap number, lap time, running total and exception status. If the sheet cannot describe the data you expect, the test design is unfinished.

For a stable roster and export process, follow the timing data and CSV guide. If the course still mixes shuttle, lap and split requirements, use the timing system selection matrix before ordering.

Course rule: choose S-002 for one same-point return result. Choose S-005 when repeated passages need separate lap records and a total. Confirm the current mode and package against the final course drawing.

Questions before choosing a course timer

Can the same athlete use either system?

Yes, but the athlete is completing a different test. Keep shuttle and lap records in separate series.

Which system suits a school shuttle test?

S-002 is published for shuttle runs, agility testing and school fitness tests. The school must still define the distance, turn action, start instruction and invalid-trial rule.

What should be confirmed before ordering?

Send the course drawing, number of passages, display position, site conditions and staff plan through the request-a-quote form when the standard product description does not answer the setup question.
